The Sacramento State athletics department boasts 20 sports (11 on the women's side, nine on the men's side),
comprised of football, men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball, baseball, softball, men's and women's
outdoor track and field, men's and women's indoor track and field, men's and women's soccer, women's gymnastics,
men's and women's tennis, women's rowing, men's and women's golf, and men's and women's cross country.
All 20 Sacramento State intercollegiate teams play at the Div. I level, while football is Div. I-AA. Fourteen
of the program's 20 sports reside in the Big Sky Conference, and the Hornets have accounted for 29 conference
championships in the past 10 years including 22 Big Sky championships since joining the league in 1996. Some of
those include conference championships last season from the volleyball (Big Sky), gymnastics (Western Athletic
Conference), rowing (Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association), women's tennis (Big Sky) and men's tennis (Big
Sky co-regular season champs) teams.
Intercollegiate athletics kicked off during the 1948-49 school year at Sacramento State. The program was a
member of the Division II ranks prior to making the jump to Division I in 1991. The Hornets have accounted for
four national championships, and eight runner-up finishes in its program history, including national titles from
the volleyball, softball and women's golf teams in 1981.
