Programs

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs

  • Supervise all areas of Student Affairs
  • Oversee all budgets associated with the division
  • Work directly with Associated Students, Inc. to foster communication between student leaders and administrators
  • Administer the student conduct code delineated in Title V
  • Coordinate and integrate the division's strategic planning, assessment, and budget processes
  • Direct university-wide enrollment management strategies, reporting, and assessment

Academic Advising

  • Advise current students regarding general education and graduation requirements
  • Educate students about Sacramento State’s policies and procedures
  • Engage students in a developmental process that helps clarify and implement educational plans consistent with their skills, interests, and values
  • Recommend course choices that are conducive to students’ academic success and persistence to graduation
  • Provide mandatory advising for first year students
  • Provide mandatory advising for second year students in academic difficulty

Admissions & Outreach

  • Represent, promote and market the university at targeted high school and community events
  • Advise prospective and returning students regarding admission/readmission
  • Coordinate the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program
  • Review applications for admission
  • Evaluate transcripts, test scores and other documents relevant to determining admissions eligibility
  • Maintain formal partnerships with high schools and community colleges to strengthen transfer, academic preparation, and admissions eligibility
  • Coordinate campus tours and events that bring students, parents, and counselors on to the Sacramento State campus
  • Provide insight and information on the Sacramento State experience to applicants and prospective students via email, US mail, websites, publications, and telephone

Associated Students, Inc.

  • Serve as representatives and advocates of and for the student body
  • Recommend student representation on ASI and university committees
  • Provide experiential education and leadership opportunities for student employees and volunteers
  • Support the campus and greater Sacramento community through various business and recreational services and campus life programs
  • Provide grant funding to support individual students, clubs, organizations, and various student service programs

Career Center

  • Provide students career development opportunities
  • Offer career exploration and counseling
  • Deliver career skills workshops and other career events
  • Support cooperative education work and educational efforts, student employment, experiential education, and internship programs
  • Assist students in job application processes
  • Provide resume and cover letter workshops to students
  • Coordinate on-campus job recruiting efforts
  • Furnish a career resource reference library for students

Counseling and Psychological Services

  • Help students cope with stress and other mental health concerns that interfere with their academic success and personal well-being through brief individual, couples, and group psychotherapy
  • Provide, via licensed psychiatrists, psychiatric evaluation and maintenance of medications
  • Offer consultation and outreach services to other university departments (i.e., Residence Life, Athletics, and Multi-Cultural Center) to help promote emotional well-being of students and staff
  • Present (when invited) classroom presentations and workshops on wellness
  • Offer academic evaluation to eligible students through Learning Disability and ADHD assessment
  • Provide crisis intervention services to students, faculty, and staff

Financial Aid

  • Help students and their parents search for, apply, receive and maintain eligibility for various types of financial aid
  • Determine financial aid awards
  • Provide proactive and responsive financial aid counseling
  • Administer awards in the form of scholarships, grants, loans, or need-based employment
  • Process financial aid disbursement in a timely and accurate manner
  • Ensure financial aid compliance with all federal, state, and university regulations
  • Research and resolve individual financial aid issues
  • Offer federal work-study resources to help eligible students earn funds for their educational expenses and provide worthwhile job opportunities

Office of Global Education

  • Establish and manage affiliations with international institutions
  • Supervise recruitment and admissions for international students (degree seeking and non-degree seeking)
  • Arrange and coordinate international study abroad and exchanges through CSU International Programs, Sacramento State Study Abroad and Exchange Programs, and Independent Study Abroad through third-party providers
  • Advise students on scholarships such as Fulbright, Gilman, and Marshall

Health Services

  • Provide (to enrolled students) outpatient medical services for acute illness or injury, immunizations, testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, women’s health exams, physical exams, laboratory testing, x-ray, and optometry
  • Provide classes and workshops to educate students about healthy lifestyle behaviors and preventative health measures
  • Provide information and counseling on alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, sexual health, nutrition, exercise, and wellness
  • Design and deliver programs that increase awareness about sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and risk reduction strategies

Housing & Residential Life

  • Offer a convenient, cost competitive, and contemporary housing program to all students who wish to live on-campus
  • Promote a healthy, productive and diverse learning environment within the residence halls
  • Facilitate the personal and academic development of residents by offering top-notch programs and hiring competent, compassionate staff
  • Guide students in developing their sense of civic responsibility, global citizenship and social responsibility
  • Maintain an environment that promotes safety, security, and sustainability

Multi-Cultural Center

  • Provide to all interested parties, a welcoming environment and center space
  • Offer programs grounded in diversity and social justice philosophies
  • Offer internships for undergraduate and graduate students in various positions which include programming, newsletter production and publicity, and peer education
  • Collaborate with programs and entities to serve students from historically under-represented and under-served groups
  • Consult with student organizations, staff, and faculty regarding event, workshop, and heritage month programming

New Student Orientation

  • Facilitate initial academic advising, course selection and registration for new first-year and transfer students
  • Advise students and their families of university expectations regarding graduation timeline, grade requirements, and university policy and procedures
  • Introduce students to campus programs and services
  • Familiarize students with the campus environment and facilities

Off-Campus Housing

  • Assist students in finding off-campus housing options that fit their needs
  • Provide helpful tips to students regarding rental housing process and resources
  • Collaborate with Associated Students, Inc. to offer on-line rental listings and roommate profiles
  • Encourage local property owners and managers to post their available properties in our rental listings

PRIDE Center

  • Coordinate dynamic programming and educational outreach to improve the campus climate for LGBTIQQ students
  • Offer education and support for Allies of the LGBTIQQ community
  • Advocate for the respect, safety and inclusion of all members of the campus community through support, appreciation, and celebration of the LGBTIQQA community at Sacramento State

Student-Athlete Resource Center

  • Offer intercollegiate athletes support in academic services, NCAA life skills, student-athlete development programs, NCAA rules compliance, and athletic-related financial services
  • Provide student athletes with mandatory academic and NCAA continuing eligibility advising
  • Provide registration and new athlete orientation support
  • Support student-athletes with tutorial and student mentoring, computer lab access, academic progress monitoring, and inclusion in campus-wide student services programs and workshops
  • Direct the NCAA and Big Sky Conference rules education programs, monitor all compliance-related athletic activities, and coordinate the certification of academic eligibility for all Division I student-athletes at Sacramento State
  • Coordinate programs to enhance student-athlete welfare and development, including freshman programs, alcohol and health education, and acting as liaison to the campus NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee
  • Facilitate 5th-year and summer athletic scholarships and special NCAA scholarship programs such as 6th-year degree-completion and minority postgraduate scholarships
  • Provide support to the Intercollegiate Athletics Department with the dissemination and interpretation of athletic-academic data such as the NCAA Academic Performance Rate and Graduation Rates reports

Student Conduct

  • Protect individual student’s rights
  • Oversee Title V student conduct regulations that help foster a safe, productive learning environment
  • Disseminate strategies (via presentations, consultations, web resources) that promote classroom order and individual safety and responsibility (on and off campus)
  • Adjudicate academic honesty and student conduct issues, infractions, and investigations
  • Ensure adherence to proper procedure in all student conduct matters

Student Organizations & Leadersip

  • Encourage and support students to become involved in campus life by participating in or leading social and co-curricular programs
  • Promote engagement in campus and community life while also instilling a sense of self-efficacy and respect for others
  • Advise more than 250 student-led clubs and organizations representing cultural, religious, political, social, academic, professional, and fraternal associations
  • Provide intentional leadership opportunities to students
  • Promote and produce student-centered program and events that encourage and develop campus pride

Testing Center

  • Administer California State University system-wide exams
  • Administer Sacramento State Departmental exams
  • Administer California Teacher Credentialing examinations
  • Administer graduate and professional school exams and licensure exams
  • Provide special testing accommodations for students with disabilities
  • Provide (as resources allow) make-up exams for missed classroom examinations
  • Administer interests and achievement tests
  • Maintain a resource library for tests and measurement instruments

University Registrar's Office

  • Assist students in understanding and following academic policies, regulations and processes regarding their enrollment, academic records and graduation
  • Provide students timely access to their academic records and to information on their progress towards degree
  • Assure the complete accuracy, integrity and security of student academic records
  • Maintain and ensure compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act – FERPA, as well as other federal and state laws and regulations
  • Register and withdraw students for courses
  • Certify enrollment and graduation
  • Provide graduation evaluation advising workshops and analyze progress toward the degree
  • Evaluate transfer credit and applicability in meeting program, major, minor and graduation requirements
  • Confer degrees and issue diplomas
  • Recommend and assist with changes to university policies and academic regulations

  • Ensure that student veterans and dependents have all payments of federal and state benefits certified to the Department of Veteran Affairs in a timely and accurate manner
  • Adapt to the changing needs of student veterans and enhance services to meet those needs
  • Provide a welcoming and inviting environment for veterans that helps ease their transition to college
  • Advocate for student veterans locally, regionally and nationally
